- I have been a fan of the Execumama Movement from day one and I know that I have discovered so much about myself just by witnessing the Execumamas in my life including you. Please share with our readers what is an Execumama and how this life-style journey began?
The journey began during the chaos of studying for the LSAT, working at a great law firm in an entry level (File Clerk) position, and focusing on what I thought I should be doing with my life. That particular whirlwind came to a screeching halt when my husband and I found out we were having our first child. During my pregnancy, my daughter helped me find the courage to look at what would make me happy long term, as opposed to pursuing "other" (in that case, law) for the typical reasons: money, stability, societal expectations, etc.). I became obsessed with seeking out women who weren't sacrificing their real desires for fear of not being what they "should" be, and I was particular interested in women who were also mothers and entrepreneurs, hence the Execumama concept. I eventually wrote a book, started blogging, and immersed myself in full-on entrepreneurship. Today, I am proud to be one of many Execumamas; women who make a conscious and consistent decision to define, design, and live their fullest version of WOMAN!
- As you know Naturi Beauty embraces the experiences of women with natural hair, what has been your experience having had natural hair? Do you find that there is too much emphasis placed on hair as a mother for both you and your daughters?
I love my hair, in all states. When I had a perm, I enjoyed that, and I have no qualms or beefs with women who decide to process their hair. To each her own, but for me and my daughters, I prefer not to use chemicals, so all three of us are loc' rockin' femmes and loving it. I've been natural since 1997 (I think!), and it works best for me. I wouldn't say there is "too much emphasis placed on hair", but for me personally, I don't get the big deal about long or short hair, permed or natural hair, colored or not colored...it's HAIR, and it should reflect how a woman is feeling about herself at that moment, free of judgment, over-analysis, and the expectations of others.
- I read and saw your video post about your OWN show. I am totally in love with it and look forward to watching us on Oprah's network, OWN. With the concept of Everyday Amazing, what tips do you have for women to celebrate themselves while embracing the imbalance of it all?
Thanks!! I'm in love with it too - LOL! As a matter of fact, I fall in love quite often, and the premise of the show is to get uber-polygamist with my love fest and share the beauty of the women around me (on a global scale) with my readers and viewers. As for tips on living in Everyday Amazing mode, self-celebration can start as small as admiring the curve of your own nail beds, to making a daily list of reasons you ROCK, to surrounding yourself ONLY with people who celebrate life in a way that feeds your soul. Imbalance for me is not a bad word, it just means an acceptance of the beautiful roller coaster called Life.
- Your blog, family journey and life-lessons are fun to read and creates an inspirational birth of sorts in myself and I'm sure your other readers as well. What are your plans for Execumama.com in the near future and where can we catch up with you?
Dude, I'm on a serious path to create and maintain conversations about self-celebration on a global scale. Such a simple feat, but it will take a level of effort and resilience that I know Creator has placed in me. You can catch up with me on Execumama.com, where I will continue to promote my articles, workshops, media projects, and writing that all fall into the Everyday Amazing category. Women are such amazing beings, and it's high time we embrace that, share that, and live that! I'm particularly excited about my signature workshop, With Mom in MInd, a series that celebrates health, food, and self for busy mothers everywhere. I'll be doing more of those in Atlanta and across the country, with the ultimate intention of a global movement. SCORE!!!!

The Naturi Beauty charge is to Nourish, Nurture and Grow. Please share with our readers how Akilah of Execumama.com is a Naturi Beauty everyday!
I awaken each day with the intention to live my fullest version of self. Some days, I fall short of that, but other times, I am able to keep my Goddess-ness about me as I move about the business of creating conversations that encourage the people within my light to be their best selves. I try not to complicate things too much, and I listen to myself. I'm very fortunate to have a natural tendency to seek whatever I need from the inside and not from external influence. That is my "Beauty", my "Gift", and quite often, what saves me.
